Music Video
Task - Music video theory
Introduction
The purpose of a music video is to visualize the lyrics of a song to the audience but more important to promote the musician's career and performance, therefore you often see music videos in which the musician is performing. Most music videos are performed and planned based on Andrew Goodwin's music video theory. Andrew's theory is composed of 6 elements, these are:
- Genre convention
- The al link between the lyrics
- Visual Link between the music
- Star representation
- notion of looking
- narrative based
However, all of these can be summed up in 4 key points
- Links - the relationship between the music and video - Literal, Amplified, and Opposite.
- Intertextuality - If there is any usage of other media text for different connotations.
- Genre convention - How are genres presented through their common characteristic.
- Strands - Narrative, Conceptual, Performance.
Links are the element that determines how the music and video are presented to the audience, therefore its purpose is to describe the relationship between the video and music. 3 typthat iskoptede presented in mass media:
- Literal Link - A 100% accurate presentation of the lyrics into the music without exaggerated narrative. A good example of a literal link is in the music video of Tom MacDonald's "the system", in his music video his lyrics focus on social-politics theories which he literally portrays in his performance, this makes it a literal
- Amplified Link - This is an exaggerated and metaphoric presentation of the lyrics in a music video, for example in the music video "My Uncle" by Ill Bill the lyrics describe Bill's uncle's life experience, and that is what got him into it, the lyrics themselves are aggressive and sad however in the animation their illustrations are exaggerated to make them look like devilish and disturbing.
- Oppositional Link - Oppositional Link is when the video and narrative are completely against the lyrics, as an example of such an oxymoron link can see in the famous music video "Take me to church", in the lyrics the singer is talking about worshiping and being religious to Christianity however in the music video we can see two men performing homosexual love which gets them assaulted by religious fanatics.
Genre Convention - Genre Conventions are characteristics that are commonly seen in a music genre, therefore, building its reputation and affiliations. For a genre like Metal characteristics of a gothic audience, moshpit, chaotic ambiance, and dark color, on the other hand, Hip Hop genre has the characteristics of crime, street culture, drugs, dominant black performance, and musicians, voyeurism, and bling. After these characteristics, most music videos will use to create their video blueStrand
Strands is a key point that covers the visual narrative and the methods used to convey it in its live or digital choreography. Narrative, conceptual, and performance are the 3 parts of this point.
- The narrative is the story and pace at which the video advances and how the audience receives it.
- Conceptual is a form of non-live performance way to tell the story such as a change in the camera shot to create a different effect on the audience or a change of focus on a different object.
- Performance is the live aspect of telling the story, performance is done by live actors and subjects. throughout choreography or acting to create a concert-like feeling that the audience can receive.
Task 2 - Music Video Analysis
In the MV "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai, the lyrical presentation into visuals is amplified because there are no images or performances that directly show the lines or topics which the singer talks about, however, he uses the common theme of these topics which are new era chaos and confusion towards them. This point could be seen in the static wide shoot of a bright white room stage with an abstract design which in the 90s and early 00s it was seen as a sci-fi setting or scenery, on the other hand, the singer is dressed normally and modern which makes him outstanding in such setting, such choices of the costume makes the link of the non-satisfied lyrics about future reality and upcoming technology with the misc-en scene elements presented into the visual representation.
Virtual Insanity rebels quite a bit against its genre characteristics, such a thing did happen because the song is a sub-genre of a main genre that is classically portrayed opposite. As evidence, we can see that Virtual Insanity is an ene. Also, lody and also its immaturity and innocent appearance appeals more to the pop genre than jazz which this melody is cateised000, jazz is usually portrayed as having a slow, emotional, and very masculine conservative appearance in which this video csuchhe early see the such thing is not presented. Therefore in conclusion is safe to say that Virtual Insanity is a modern pop approach to jazz genre characteristics.
All 3 strands of Goodwin's theory are presented in JQ's video "Virtual Insanity". One of the most outstanding strands which captivate the most attention is performance, this is due to the energetic moves JQ presents, such thing could be seen in the wide shot, which covers all of the play-time, where JQ is constantly break-dancing and performing without a stop or change in performance, therefore showing one of the 3 strands which are performance by maintaining a constant appearance of it in his MV.
On the other hand, the narrative and conceptual strands are very minimalistic in having an effect on the MV, the narrative element could be seen in some changes in camera angles and setting which does not hold for enough time for you to understand some such as the change of the stage into a smaller one, and the conceptual work is in the camera movement on a CGI crow and random cockroaches in which once again it has no effect to the narrative as they are to speed up and no time for the audience to understand or feel anything about them.
Task 3 - Camera Licences
1. The aim of the license test is to test our knowledge about using the camera and operating the camerexamplelly, f,or examreturnertureampeture to changean objectus of a object and iso to make our camera suitable for the light amount we are exposed.2. I still need to work on my shutter spepracticempracticeractise due to still not managing how to successfully balance them.
3. With this test, I have learned to operate the exposure triangle much better as now I know more about each feature and how they tribute the exposure of a picture
for example: Shutter speed - How smooth or still you capture a moving object; Amputer - how much light is allowed in the lense.
Task 4 - Vox pox
TASK 5 - keylight
High key lighting - The brightness of the shot is high and there is not as much shadow or depth in the main object
Low key lighting - The object or ndscaa has a lot of shadow and depth as it creates a contrast between the light and ratioation.
Rembrandt - This is a method of portrait lighting placement in which a way a way that it doesn't only create depthlow-keyw key lighting but also it creates a light triangcheekboneath the cheekbone.
Split - The light placement is catethatn such a way which divides theintoban ject into oanerexposea d aa rea and a low exposed area.
Task 6 - Lyrical analysis
Task 7 - AV/script
Task 8
Task 9
- For the arranging it was very difficult as it was a very short deadline, also arranging the location at a specific time was very challenging as they were pretty far from each other and some of them were even available only at a specific time, for example, the tube scene, we had to wait until the tube got delayed so that we can have enough time to record multiple scenes.
Task 10- SWOT Analysis
Task 11 - Final-cut
Song: Madder
Task 12 - Final evalutiona
Organization in my group was a very big problem due to different schedules and no interest to achieve the best group, also quite rushed due for the holiday coming up and we had to have the raw footage before the holiday. My crew was not really presentable, but they really show no interest and did not cope with fundemental requests such as for them to film in speciffic order or be part of the group work and also a lack in formallity and seriousity. Although with the problems before i have maneged in such way a time for us to shot and a location which did not bother them and atlest get some of the footage.
The planning of the music video was very straight forward due to me lowering the request in order to film something at least. The content in the video was a little freestyle due to rush it and also due not complete everything when it comes to the planning sheets. I think that if we finished the planning for all the shots it would've been better when it comes to the quality of it.
The shot which started the music video was my favorite due to the fact that this one was actually the only planned and successful shot put into practise and also its longevity helped me to use the effect and editing I planned to be.
When using the editing software Adobe Premier I was aware of fundamental edits which helps me give the video the intended effect, however, I wasn't aware of many things which I have discovered by myself such as color correlation and the use of mask and key frames.
I think the music video came out horribly however what I am satisfied with is that its template as a video really opens a lot of potential and opportunities which if I get back to it later on to remaster it, I would probably know how to complete, and rise its quality. A good technique i learned and i would put to practice later on in my carrer would probably be planning as i really felt its importance in the making of my video.
